UB Women Begin MAC Tourney At Marshall

Bulls tip off against Thundering Herd at 1 pm on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY - All the records get thrown out the window this weekend when the University at Buffalo women's basketball team faces Marshall in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Bulls - who posted a 79-60 home win over Marshall in the schools' only meeting this season - enter the tournament as the 11-seed, while Marshall seeded sixth.

The winner of this Saturday's contest will advance to Cleveland, OH's Gund Arena and face third-seeded Kent State at 7:30 pm on Wednesday.

Buffalo (6-20, 4-12 MAC) ended the season on a three-game losing streak, most recently falling at home to Ohio on Tuesday by a 62-56 score.

Senior forward Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen, MI/Quincy) leads UB in scoring (14.0 points per contest, sixth in the MAC) and rebounding (8.4 boards per game, fourth in the MAC). Her fellow senior post player, Kim Kilpela (West Bloomington, MI/West Bloomington), will be looking to reach a milestone on Saturday. Kilpela is just 15 points shy of reaching 1,000 points for her career.

Both teams enter the game shooting just a shade above 40 percent from the field, although the Thundering Herd averages 65.7 points per contest as compared to UB's 59.2. Part of the reason for that disparity is due to the fact that Marshall (42.1 rebounds per contest, first in the MAC) is averaging nearly eight more boards per game than Buffalo is (34.3, 12th in the MAC).

The Thundering Herd (16-11, 8-8 MAC) has won two in a row, including Tuesday's 67-52 home trouncing of Akron. Senior forward Catie Knable is nearly averaging a double-double with 9.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Sikeetha Shepard-Hall's 11.2 points per contest lead Marshall.

The all-time series between the two schools is now even at five wins apiece. Saturday's match-up will be the first ever time that the teams have met in the MAC Tournament.
