Bulls Fall 63-62 to Bowling Green

Eighth-seeded UB to host Akron in first round of MAC Playoffs

BUFFALO, NY - Francine Miller's two free throws with 4.9 seconds lifted Bowling Green past the University at Buffalo 63-62 in Mid-American Conference action at Alumni Arena.

The Bulls (17-10, 7-9) claimed the eighth and final host spot for the upcoming MAC Tournament beginning Monday night. UB tied with Akron for the eighth seed, but claimed the final slot based on tiebreakers. Bowling Green (10-16, 8-8) clinched the seventh seed and will host Ohio University.

UB trailed 26-23 in the first half before going on a 16-0 run extending from the end of the first half through the first minute and a half of the second stanza to take a 39-23 lead. Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) scored the final ten points of the first half for the Bulls during the run. Bell finished with a season-high 33 points with seven rebounds and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.

Bowling Green, the top three-point shooting team in the country, was 5-of-13 in the second half from behind the arc as the Falcons reclaimed the lead, 56-54, on a three by Sherry Kahle. The lead see-sawed for the rest of the conest with three ties and three lead changes and neither team leading by more than three points.

The Bulls took a 62-59 lead with 1:49 left when Bell scored on a three-point play. A jumper by Miller cut the margin to one, 62-61, with 54 seconds to go before Miller made the two free throws with 4.9 seconds left.

UB had a final chance to win as Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) drove the lane but her layup attempt fell off the rim as the buzzer sounded. McClure finished with 15 points and Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) grabbed seven boards. Miller led the Falcons with 22 points while Jaymee Wappes had 14 including four three-pointers.

The loss was the Bulls fifth in a row while Bowling Green has now won four straight.

"We did everything to win the game defensively tonight," said UB coach Cheryl Dozier. "But we really hurt ourselves with turnovers. We have to fina a way to refocus and put together the same effort on Monday."

The Bulls face Akron (11-16, 7-9) in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Monday night at Alumni Arena with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The two teams split their meetings this season with UB winning 70-58 at Akron January 22 and the Zips taking a 65-68 win on February 9 at Alumni Arena.
