Bulls Fall To Nationally-Ranked Falcons

Bowling Green hits 14 more foul shots in the 65-51 victory

BOWLING GREEN, OH - The Bowling Green Falcons, ranked 25th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, used a 23-6 run midway through the second half to claim a 65-51 victory over the University at Buffalo women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena. The loss drops the Bulls to 8-16 on the season and 3-10 during MAC play.

The Bulls were able to run with Bowling Green during a first half that saw 26 fouls, 16 on the Bulls. In the first half alone, BGSU went to the charity stripe 15 more times and overall took 18 more trips. While the Bulls managed to convert on the same amount of field goals and the same amount of three-point field goals, the difference came down to free throws. UB finished the game on a 10-0 run, including five points from Flynn Pyykkonen (Clarkston, MI/Birmingham Marian).

"This was very frustrating because it shows that we can play with a nationally-ranked team like Bowling Green," said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "We have to be a little more under control defensively so some of those fouls aren't committed."

The Bulls finished with three players in double figures, including a game-high 15 points from sophomore Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge). Pyykkonen recorded 11 points, nine of those in the second half, and senior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) finished with 10. Bennett and Pyykkonen both fell just short of double-doubles as they finished with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

UB was given a spark off the bench as freshman Rachelle Matthys (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) returned to the lineup and recorded two points in 20 minutes of action. In addition to Matthys, the Bulls used all 10 players in the game, nine of them seeing double figures in minutes.

The Falcons (22-2, 13-0 MAC) were led by three players in double figures. Carin Horne, Liz Honegger and Kate Achter all recorded 11 points for BGSU. Achter finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Bulls return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Athens, OH to take on the Ohio Bobcats. UB fell at home earlier this season to Ohio. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
