BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team got a solid performance from sophomore Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage), but it wasn’t enough as Bowling Green, ranked 17th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, defeated UB, 85-44, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The loss drops UB to 8-17 on the season and 3-10 in conference play. BGSU improves to 24-2 on the season and remains undefeated in the MAC at 13-0.

The Falcons led wire-to-wire as UB tried to hang early with BGSU, who shot 54.4 percent from the field. UB cut the Bowling Green lead to six with 12:29 remaining in the first half, but got no closer. Later in the opening half of play, BGSU would go on a 14-1 run, increasing its lead to 23. A three pointer by Belinda Gibb (Denmark, Western Australia/Willetton) at the end of the first left UB trailing by 20 at the break.

The Bulls scored a few baskets early in the second half, before Bowling Green went on a 28-4 run and held its biggest lead at 44 with 7:34 remaining in the game. The Bulls defense then held Bowling Green scoreless for nearly six minutes as BGSU didn’t find the basket again until the 1:41 mark in the half.

“Bowling Green put a defensive clinic on in our arena tonight,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “They got out to our shooters quickly and played great team defense. Hopefully our team can learn a few lessons from their defensive effort.”

On the offensive end, UB was led by a career-high 17 points from Schiebner. The second-year forward also led UB on the glass as she had six rebounds. 15 players saw action for the Bulls, including sophomore Dortae Freeman (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) who tied her career-high with seven points, including her first career three-pointer. Sophomore walk-on Tomi Abayomi (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) scored her first career basket, while senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater), who walked on after a four-year career with the UB volleyball team, saw her first game action of the season.

Bowling Green was led by 22 points from Megan Thornburn and 15 points from Carin Horne. Kate Achter rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points.

Junior Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) was honored prior to the game as she became just the 16th player in UB women’s basketball history to record 1,000 points.

The Bulls remain home for their final game at Alumni Arena this season. UB hosts Ohio on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Not only will UB honor its two seniors, but the Bulls will also celebrate National Girls and Women In Sports Day.
