BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Central Michigan squad on Saturday night, falling to the Chippewas, 80-57, at Alumni Arena. CMU converted on 13-of-25 from behind the arc and scored 50 second half points to defeat the Bulls. The loss evens up UB’s record at 12-12 and drops it to 5-6 in the MAC.

UB got off to a quick start to the game, scoring the first eight points of the contest. However, the 8-0 advantage would be UB’s largest of the game as Central Michigan fought back by going on a 7-0 run of its own. UB did see its lead reach eight on one more occasion with a 24-16 lead at the 6:41 mark of the first half, however CMU responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead. The two teams wound up going into the half tied at 30-30.

The second half was all Central Michigan as it outscored UB 50-27 in the half. A layup by freshman Jessica Fortman (Ashland, KY/Russell) gave the Bulls a 36-32 advantage early in the half, but CMU fought back and the game eventually got tied at 45-45 with 12:49 left in the half. From there, CMU went on an 18-2 run over the next six minutes and increased its lead to 63-47. In all, CMU outscored UB 35-12 in the final 12:49 of the game.

The Bulls were led by 19 points from Fortman, who just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Senior Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) had 12 points and nine rebounds in the contest. Senior Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points. Sophomore Ashley Zuber (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) had a game-high six assists.

Central Michigan was led by 19 points from Candace Wilson and 16 points from Britni Houghton. In all, four players scored in double figure for the Chippewas, who shot 52.0 percent from behind the arc and the 80 points scored by CMU were the most allowed by the Bulls this season.

With its game against CMU complete, the Bulls have now finished their six-game swing with the MAC West and will move back to the MAC East for their final five regular season games. The Bulls will remain home this Wednesday as they host Miami (OH). Tip off with the RedHawks is set for 7:00 pm.
