Bulls Fall Short At Western Michigan, 73-67
The Bulls got off to a quick start to the game as senior Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) scored the first six points for the Bulls. The game was tight for much of the first half as it was tied four times during the first eight minutes of play. Tied at 14, the Bulls scored five straight points, capped off on a Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) three and took their largest lead of the game 19-14. The Bulls held on to their lead until a WMU three-pointer at the 4:19 mark gave the Broncos their first lead of the game. A layup by Turner with 1:28 left gave UB the lead back, but it would be the Bulls' final lead of the night. Western Michigan ended up taking a three-point lead into the half. The Broncos opened the second half by scoring the first five points to jump out to an eight-point lead. That lead would get to be as much as 10 with 10:43 left before the Bulls tried to mount a comeback. Bennett and junior Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) hit back-to-back threes to pull the Bulls within four, but Western Michigan answered with four quick points of its own. Schiebner hit another three late in the half to put the Bulls within five, but the Broncos answered with a jumper. Bennett drilled a three of her own to get UB within four with 35 seconds left, but they would get no closer.
Turner and Schiebner led the way for the Bulls with 20 points apiece. The 20 points for Schiebner were a career high and the junior also added a game-high 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Turner fell just short of the double-double, finishing with nine rebounds on the night. Both players were extremely efficient from the floor as Schiebner shot 9-of-12, while Turner converted on 9-of-13. Bennett also finished the evening in double figures as she scored 11 points and two rebounds, putting her over 400 rebounds for her career. That number makes Bennett the first player in school history to have 1,000 career points, 400 career assists and 400 career rebounds. Western Michigan was led by four players in double figures, including 15 points from Tiera DeLaHoussaye, who also recorded a game-high nine assists and had six steals on the night. Molly Dwyer and Sara Vest each added 12 points for the Broncos. The Bulls return home for their final game against the MAC West Division when they host Central Michigan this Saturday. Tip off against the Chippewas is set for 5:00 pm and will be the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men. |
