Bulls Fall In Overtime Thriller

UB women drop 69-68 shootout to Toledo

BUFFALO, NY - Jennifer Markwood's free throw with 42 seconds remaining in overtime proved to be the game-winner as Toledo scored a 69-68 overtime victory over the University at Buffalo at Alumni Arena.

The Bulls (17-7, 7-6 MAC) had a chance to win the contest in the overtime session. Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) stole an inbounds pass at midcourt who threw a pass to Colleen Tabor (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) but Tabor's layup attempt with four seconds to go was too hard against the glass and rebounded by the Rockets.

After the Bulls took a 59-58 lead with five seconds left in regulation on a Bell free throw, Toledo (10-12, 7-5 MAC) sent the game into the extra session as Adriane Bryant canned a free throw with 0.7 seconds left tying the contest at 59.

In the overtime, UB took a 68-65 lead with 1:36 left when Tara Perrier (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) hit a three pointer from the left baseline but Toledo immediately answered with a three by Kahli Carter with 1:22 left before Markwood hit the game-winning free throw.

The contest was tied 13 times including at halftime (28-28) after the Bulls put together a 10-4 run to close the first half.

"I'm not ashamed of the way we played," said Buffalo coach Cheryl Dozier. "I thought we played as hard as we could. We've just got to figure out this depth problem. We're playing with six scholarship kids right now and three walk-ons. We've just to figure out a way to get it done."

Bell led the Bulls with 18 points, including scoring the 1,000th of her career on the Bulls' first shot of the game becoming only the second junior in school history to achieve the mark. She also moved into tenth place on UB's all-time scoring list with 1,016. Perrier added 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/W. Bloomfield) added 13 and a team-best 12 rebounds.

Bryant led the Rockets with 24 points and Courtney Risinger added 20, with 15 in the first half. Markwood, the Mid-American Conference's leading rebounder led Toledo with 11 boards.

The Bulls conclude their homestand next Saturday when they host Marshall in a Mid-American Conference showdown.
