Western Michigan Too Much For Bulls

Stephanie Bennett leads UB with 13 points

KALAMAZOO, MI - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell victim to a 48 percent shooting performance from Western Michigan, dropping an 86-42 contest, Saturday afternoon at University Arena. The Broncos jumped out to a quick start and never looked back as they handed the Bulls their 15th loss of the season. The Bulls shot just 30.8 percent from the field, their second lowest total of the season.

Western Michigan began the game on a 10-1 run and then used a 16-0 run during a five-minute period of the first half to jump out to a 37-9 lead. The Bulls would fight back, but went into the half trailing, 40-15. The Broncos finished the game on a 21-8 run during the final 10 minutes of action.

"They certainly outplayed us in every aspect of the game today," said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "We turned the ball over too many times, especially early in the game, and there is no excuse for that."

Sophomore Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) was the lone player in double figures for the Bulls who fell to 7-15 on the season and 2-9 in MAC play. Sophomore Flynn Pyykkonen (Clarkston, MI/Birmingham Marian) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds as she started for the fourth time this season. Pyykkonen added four points in the contest. Sophomore Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) added seven points and seven rebounds for Buffalo.

The Bulls used all 10 players who dressed for the game, including freshman walk on Tomi Abayomi (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) who pulled in a rebound in her first action on the season. Freshman Rayna Brown (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) played a season-high 19 minutes and recorded a new career high with five points.

The Broncos (11-11, 8-3 MAC) were led by four players in double figures, including a game-high 23 points from Carrie Moore. Casey Rost added 17 points and Maria Jilian and Chandra Smith finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bulls return to facing teams from the MAC East, beginning with a home contest against Miami (OH) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Bulls defeated the RedHawks earlier this season in Oxford, 78-75.
