Red-Hot Zips Beat Bulls, 65-58

Bell scores 24 in a losing effort as Buffalo loses second straight at home

BUFFALO, NY - Erica Glover scored 23 points and the visiting Zips of Akron shot a blistering 53% from the field and defeated the University at Buffalo, 65-58, in a Mid-American Conference game at Alumni Arena.

Glover had 15 of her points in the second half as the Zips (8-14, 4-7 in the MAC) overcame a 34-30 halftime deficit to hand Buffalo its second straight home loss. The Bulls (17-6, 7-5) were led by junior center Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) who had 24 points and fell just two points shy of the 1,000-point mark.

Cheryl Bowles added 21 points for Akron while Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/W. Bloomfield) had 13 points and six rebounds for Buffalo and Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) had 10 points and five assists.

Akron had a huge advantage at the foul line in the game- making as many free throws (13-of-26) as Buffalo attempted. Akron took the lead for good on a layup by Katie Hank with 11:16 remaining to make it 45-44. The Bulls tied the game at 47-47 on a three-pointer by Colleen Tabor (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) but the Zips then went on a 6-0 run - including four points by Glover -to take command 53-47 with 7:41 remaining.

Buffalo got as close as 57-55 on two free throws by Bell, but Bowles scored a key bucket with 2:31 remaining to put it away. The Zips shot an impressive 53% for the game from the field while the Bulls shot just 32% in the second half.

"We got in foul trouble in the first half and we just can't afford to do that with our lack of depth," said UB coach Cheryl Dozier. "We didn't play Buffalo defense tonight. They hurt us in transition in the first half and Glover really took over in the second half."

Bell will need just two points to become only the 11th player in UB women's basketball history - and just the second junior -to go over 1,000 points in her career when UB hosts Toledo on Saturday night at 5:30 pm at Alumni Arena.
