Bulls Stop Broncos

Seniors lead UB to 85-56 home win over Western Michigan

BUFFALO, NY - All four seniors scored in double figures, and the University at Buffalo women's basketball team outrebounded Western Michigan by a 52-23 margin en route to earning an 85-56 home win over the Broncos. Buffalo was led by senior Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) with 25 points and six rebounds, and senior Tara Perrier (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) added a season-high 17 points for the Bulls, hitting five three-pointers in front of 1,344 fans, the ninth-highest total of all-time to attend a UB women's basketball game in Alumni Arena.

Buffalo senior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) opened the scoring with a three-pointer on Buffalo's first possession, and the Bulls never trailed from that point on. After a three-pointer by WMU's Sarah Hurrle got the Broncos within five, 24-19 with 7:13 on the clock, the Bulls embarked on an 18-6 run to close the half and take a 42-25 lead into the lockerroom. Bell had 13 first-half points, and the Bulls outrebounded Western Michigan by a 27-14 margin, including grabbing 12 offensive boards.

In the second half, Buffalo continued to increase its lead to as many as 30 points while limiting the Broncos' chances on their offensive end. Hurrle had 14 of her game-high 26 points in the final 20 minutes of play, but the Bulls had a commanding lead that they would not relinquish. McClure finished with 14 points and a career-high eight assists, and senior Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, all in the first half, to go along with six assists and three steals. Freshman Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen, MI/Quincy) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and Western Michigan's Karen Deurloo also finished in double digits with 10 points.

"We came out of the gate with a lot of intensity and emotion tonight and for the first time all season, we kept it up for a full 40 minutes," said UB head coach Cheryl Dozier. "We had all four seniors in double figures which was nice, but we really won the game on the glass. We outrebounded them by almost 30, and we had 25 offensive boards. That tells me that we played aggressively tonight. It was a great team effort."

Buffalo (15-6, 6-4 MAC) is home again on Saturday, February 10, hosting Ball State at 1:30 pm. The game is a doubleheader with the UB men's basketball team, which hosts Bowling Green at 4:00 pm. Both games are being televised live on Empire Sports Network.
