Bulls Down Ball State, 73-62
“I knew that if we could put 40 minutes of basketball together that we could be successful today,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “I thought we did a nice job coming back after a disappointing loss on Thursday and got a total team effort today.” The Bulls scored the first four points of the game and scored eight of the first 10 points of the contest. Junior Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) had the first two baskets for UB. Up 15-9, the Bulls went on a quick 7-0 run to take a 13-point advantage to go up 22-9 with 7:18 left in the half. Late in the half Ball State’s Kiley Jarrett hit a three to get Ball State within eight, but Bennett converted on two straight three-pointers to give the Bulls their largest lead of the game at 14. UB took a 12-point lead into the half at 32-20.
The two teams came out in the second half and exchanged baskets for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the half. Ball State got within nine, but at the 9:12 mark of the second half, Bennett scored her 1,000th career point on a three to put UB back up by 12. The Cardinals got the UB lead down to six on a three-pointer at the 4:55 mark, but the Bulls scored the next five points to go back up by 11. Ball State got the lead down to seven on two free throws from Julie DeMuth, but Bennett hit her fifth three of the game at the 1:45 mark to go back up by 10. The Bulls scored three straight points after that from the free throw line to go up by 13 points. The Cardinals added a bucket in the final 18 seconds for the final score, 73-62. Bennett led three players in double figures for UB with a game-high 24 points. Bennett also had eight rebounds in the contest. Schiebner had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Jessica Fortman (Ashland, KY/Russell) had 14 points and eight rebounds. Fortman also had two blocks in the contest. Junior Dortae Freeman (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) had five points, five rebounds and six assists.
The Bulls dominated the contest on the boards, outrebounding Ball State, 46-34. All eight players to see action in the game had at least three points and at least one rebound. UB shot 43.5 percent from the floor and converted on 6-of-10 from behind the arc. Ball State was led by 16 points and 10 rebounds from DeMuth and 13 points and nine rebounds from Porchia Green. The Bulls return home this Saturday when they host Toledo at 2:00 pm. The game will serve as the WBCA’s “Think Pink” game.
