WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Falls To Bowling Green, 69-65

Bulls Squander 18-Point First Half Lead

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team jumped out to an 18-point lead 17 minutes into the game, hitting 16 of their first 28 shots but connected on just 7-of-24 (29 percent) the rest of the way as Bowling Green (7-14, 4-6 MAC) edged the Bulls (9-12, 4-6 MAC), 69-65, at Alumni Arena on Saturday night to sweep the season series.

Sophomore Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen, MI/Quincy) led the Bulls with a career-high 22 points and junior Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe (Nelson,New Zealand/University at Hawaii) recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. McKeeken-Ruscoe fell just short of her first career triple-double as she recorded eight assists. Sophomore Virginia Jennings (Nashville, MI/Hastings) also added 16 points and had eight assists.

"It was a tale of two halves," said Buffalo coach Cheryl Dozier. "It was a great first half, but we came out flat, unemotional, and without any defensive stops in the second half. Bowling Green wanted the game more, just like when we were at their place. We need to find a way to win and stop finding ways to lose."

The Bulls held a two-point advantage five minutes into the game before going on a 25-9 run to take their largest lead of the game, 39-21, with 3:19 remaining in the half. However, Bowling Green began chipping away at the Buffalo lead and pulled within 12 points (42-30) before the end of the half.

The Falcons picked up where they left off in the second half, going on a 14-6 run to pull within four points before eventually tying the game at 54-54 with 9:43 remaining. After Buffalo failed to counter, Stefanie Wenzel connected on one of her game-high five three-pointers to give Bowling Green its first lead since the 18:32 mark of the first half. Over the next four minutes the Falcons stretched their lead to six points twice before the Bulls tied the game at 62-62 with 4:06 remaining. Jennings then converted a free throw to put the Bulls up by one point but Bowling Green's Kim Griech drained a three-pointer to start a 7-2 Falcon run to close the game.

Buffalo made just two field goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, both by Jennings - a three-pointer at 5:28 and a lay-up at 4:06. Sophomore Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) left the game in the first two minutes with a leg injury and did not return.

The Bulls, who have now dropped the last two games, will travel to Western Michigan for a Mid-American Conference matchup with the Broncos on Tuesday, February 5 (7 p.m.).
