BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start as they fell to the visiting Bowling Green Falcons, 75-56, Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls, who were in foul trouble for most of the game, fell to 9-8 on the season and 2-2 in MAC play.

Bowling Green went on a 13-0 run midway through the first half to go up 27-10 at the 8:11 mark of the half. The Bulls were able to cut the BGSU lead to 10, but the Falcons ultimately took a 12-point lead in the half at 35-23. UB played much of the first half without its two leading scorers, Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) and Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge), who were each sidelined with two early fouls.

In the second half, the Bulls kept fighting as they would get the BGSU lead down to 10 at the 6:11 mark on a layup from Turner. The Falcons responded with five quick points and eventually got their lead up to 22 with 18 seconds left. That lead was their largest of the game. Junior Dortae Freeman (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) hit a three with 10 seconds left to make the score 75-56, which was the final.

“I thought this game was very similar to our last game against Ohio,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “We dug ourself in an early hole and we were unable to get out of it. I think the key for this team is consistency and when we develop that consistency, we are going to be a very good team.”

The Bulls were led by 12 points from Turner, all coming in the second half. Turner went 6-for-7 from the field with five rebounds. Freshman Jessica Fortman (Ashland, KY/Russell) had eight points and four rebounds. Junior Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) and freshman Bridgette Kendricks (Parsons, KS/Parsons) each had eight points as well. Freeman had five points, three rebounds, a team-high five assists and a game-high four steals.

Bowling Green, which improved to 15-3 on the year and 4-0 in the MAC, was led by 17 points and eight rebounds from Tara Breske. Kate Achter had 16 points and seven assists, while Crystal Murdaugh added 13 points.

The Bulls will hit the road this Tuesday as they head to Kent State. Tip off against the Golden Flashes is set for 7:00 pm.
