Bulls Battle Back to Down Zips, 55-51
The host Zips scored the first eight points of the game and had their largest lead of the game at 14 with a 23-9 lead with 8:03 left in the first half. UB was able to cut the Akron lead to eight as freshman Bridgette Kendricks (Parsons, KS/Parsons) stole an Akron pass and converted the easy layup with five seconds left, going into the half down 30-22.
The Bulls came out firing in the second half, going on an 11-0 run over the first 4:20 of the half. The game was tied on a jumper from junior Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) and the Bulls took their first lead of the game on a three pointer from freshman Jessica Fortman (Ashland, KY/Russell) at the 15:41 mark. Buffalo got its lead up to six on layup from Kendricks at the 11:11 mark, but a quick 6-0 run by the Zips tied the game up at 41-41. The game was tied for the sixth and final time at 44-44 with 5:19 remaining before UB went on a 7-1 run that was capped off by two Kendricks free throws. Senior Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) had a key three pointer during that run for the Bulls. Akron would cut the UB lead to two with 24 seconds remaining, but junior Dortae Freeman (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) hit two free throws with 18 second left to seal the win for the Bulls. “This was a difficult game for us to win because we didn’t play very well at points,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “I am very proud of our team because we found a way to win and we are able to end this tough road trip with two wins.” The Bulls were led by senior Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) who had a game-high 17 points, while adding seven rebounds in the contest. Kendricks had 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four steals off the bench, while Bennett, who was playing her 100th game in a UB uniform, had 10 points and four assists. Fortman also finished with seven rebounds in the contest and had six points in the game. Freeman, who had all three of her points from the charity stripe, joined Bennett with a game-high four assists.
Akron was led by 13 points from Keyla Snowden and seven rebounds from Lauren Stephenson. The Bulls return home for a brief two-game homestand starting on Wednesday night against Ohio. The Bulls and Bobcats tip off at 7:00 pm. |
