Turnovers Prove Costly In Loss To FalconsBUFFALO, NY – The visiting Bowling Green Falcons used a 15-2 run in the first half en route to a 75-48 victory over Buffalo, Tuesday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls turned the ball over 26 times in the contest, a season high for UB. The loss drops Buffalo to 6-7 on the season and 1-1 in MAC play. The Bulls got off to a good start and led for the majority of the first 10 minutes of play, but the reigning MAC Champions took advantage of their experience and their size as they had four double-digit scorers.
Sophomore Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) led the way for Buffalo as she scored a team-high 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting as she continues to lead the league in field goal percentage. Turner also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for UB. Joining Turner in double digits was fellow sophomore Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) who recorded 10 points while pulling down five boards and recording a game-high five assists.
"It was more of what we did to ourselves tonight than what they did to us," head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald said. "They had a great game plan and we had a hard time controlling the ball." The Falcons were able to take advantage of the turnovers once they were recorded as BGSU scored 29 points off turnovers, compared to five for UB. Despite the difference in score, the two teams shot pretty even from the field as the Falcons shot 42.4 percent, while the Bulls, who led the MAC in field goal shooting prior to tonight's game, shot 41.7 percent on 20-of-48 shooting. The Bulls struggled from the free throw line tonight, as they shot just 2-of-10, as opposed to Bowling Green that shot 11-of-15. The Bulls also recorded 36 rebounds in the game, opposed to a 37-board performance from BGSU. In fact, nine different UB players recorded rebounds and eight different Bulls recorded points. The Falcons (11-2, 2-0 MAC) were led by Carin Horne who scored a season-high 17 points. Liz Honegger recorded a double-double as she dropped 14 points and pulled in 10 rebounds and Megan Thornburn and Ali Mann recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively. The Bulls return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they host the Ohio Bobcats in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m. |
