Bulls Score Incredible Comeback VictoryBOWLING GREEN, OH - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team continued their school-record winning streak in most improbable fashion on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena. The Bulls were trailing the host Falcons by 20 points in the second half and had to play the final 17 minutes without leading scorer Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) who sprained her ankle. Rather than folding, however, the Bulls' rallied to score 54 second-half points and score an incredible 85-81 win to improve to 12-1 on the season and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. The heroes were many for UB who won despite Bowling Green (3-10, 1-2 in the MAC) shooting 63% for the game. Junior Tara Perrier (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting off the bench. Perrier connected on 7-of-9 three-point shots and also added seven rebounds in 25 minutes. The Bulls also got huge contributions from a pair of freshmen -Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) and Colleen Tabor (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) -and another great game from senior Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach). Kilpela had a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds while Tabor came off the bench to hit two key three-pointers down the stretch and added two assists. Ortega nearly had a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and also had three steals. The Bulls fell behind 44-31 at halftime and things looked all but hopeless when Bell, who has led the MAC in scoring and ranks among the top 20 in the nation, went down with the ankle sprain early in the second half. Instead of closing shop, however, the Bulls put an exclamation point on their current 12-game win streak. "This team is very young," said second-year head coach Cheryl Dozier, "but they are incredibly resilient. Everyone rallied when Tiffany got hurt and we never stopped playing. This was a tremendous win for the kids and was also big in the fact that we have to prove that we can win on the road consistently in this conference." Buffalo plays at Northern Illinois on Monday night before returning to Alumni Arena
next Saturday to host defending MAC champion Kent State at 7:30 pm. |
