Bulls Claw Bobcats in MAC Opener

Bell gets 28 as Buffalo rolls past Ohio, 73-53, in Alumni Arena

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team extended their school record winning streak to eleven games defeating Ohio 73-53 in their first Mid-American Conference game of the season. Junior center Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field while junior guard Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) had 11 points and five rebounds.

Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier commented on tonight's win.

"I felt tonight's win was another great team effort for us," stated Dozier. "I credit tonight's win to our defense and rebounding and to the fact that everyone came into tonight and gave us some quality minutes."

Ohio scored the first two buckets of the game but Buffalo's Bell hit a layup with 18:28 to go in the first stanza and the Bulls never looked back. Buffalo, who had all eleven players see action tonight, led by as much as 25 points in the second half on two different occassions.

For the game, Buffalo went 45.6% (26-of-57) from the field and outrebounded the Bobcats by seven, 40-33. The Bulls also forced the Bobcats into 25 turnovers for the game.

Senior guard Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) had another solid performance for the Bulls with nine points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals while freshman forward Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield/West Bloomfield) pitched in nine points and eight boards.

Ohio had two players score in double figures led by Jacquie Negrelli who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Brittany Collins had 18 points and 11 boards as the Bobcats move to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league action.

The Bulls move to 11-1 overall this season and 1-0 in conference action.

"I was really happy with the fact that we came ready to play tonight and once again took care of business at home," said Dozier. "Now we have to show everyone we can win on the road in this league."

Next up for the Bulls is a two-game road stint starting Saturday (1/8) at Bowling Green at 2:00pm and continuing at Northern Illinois on Monday (1/10).
