Turner Named MAC East Player of the WeekBUFFALO, NY - Sophomore forward Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) became the first MAC player during 2005-06 to be named MAC Player of the Week numerous times when she was given the honor for the second time in three weeks on Monday, the league office announced. Turner averaged 18.0 points and 8.7 rebounds during the three Buffalo games this past week and was one of five players named to the all-tournament team at the UTSA Wells Fargo Classic. Turner began her week with a career-high 25-point performance against Bucknell and then followed that with a 23-point performance against UTSA. Turner also recorded twelve rebounds against Bucknell, giving her a double-double for the third time this season.
Turner is the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year and has continued to be impressive in her sophomore season. Turner earned her first player of the week honor after scoring 18 points in the Bulls victory against Northeastern. She shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the field in that game. Turner currently leads the MAC in field goal percentage as she is hitting 62.6 percent of her shots. She currently ranks 10th in the conference in scoring (14.4) and third in rebounds (8.6), leading the Bulls in both of those categories. Turner becomes the first UB player to win the award multiple times in one season since the 2002-03 season when Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe won the award in consecutive weeks. This is the third time the Bulls have won this award as senior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) was named player of the week earlier in the season. The three player of the week honors tie Central Michigan for the most this season. Turner and the Bulls begin MAC play when they travel to Miami (OH) on Saturday, January 7 for a 2 p.m. matchup with the RedHawks. |
