UB Women Advance To Championship Game

Face Fresno State in Championship Game

BUFFALO, NY - The Bulls women's basketball team defeated Boston University 78-51 Satruday evening in the first round of the UB Tournament. The Bulls advance to the championship game and will face Fresno State, who defeated Florida Atlantic 84-74 in the other first round match up.

The Bulls had a 35-24 lead at the half and extended that lead to 16 points before the Terriers made a comeback. Boston used a 13-1 run to cut the lead to just four pointrs, 43-39, with 12:44 remaining. The Bulls held their composure, and responded with an 11-0 run of their own to push the lead back up to 15 points, 54-39 at the 10-minute mark. Tiffany Bell scored five of her game-high 23 points during that run. UB increased their lead to as much as 29 points, 76-47, with just under one minute remaining and ended with a 78-57 victory.

The first half went back and forth as the teams exchanged the lead four times and had four ties. The largest lead of the halftime advantage. The last tie came at the 5:30 mark when the score was knotted at 22-22. The Bulls used a 15-4 run to close the half and take the momentum into halftime.

UB (6-1) was led by Tiffany Bell with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Kim Coon came off the bench to score 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists in an all around performance. Samantha Cerny added 13 points and nine rebounds as well. Catherine Jacob had four assist in the game, and in the process became UB's career assist leader. Jacob now has 464 career assists.

In the earlier game, Fresno State won a scrappy game against Florida Atlantic, 84-74. Fresno State had balanced scoring as five players hit for double-figures. Connie Krueger led the way off the bench with 19 points. Florida Atlantic was led by Yonka Moses who poured in 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Bulls will face Fresno State in the championship game at 3 p.m. at Alumni Arena. The consulation game will feature Boston against Florida Atlantic beginning at 1 p.m.
