Bulls Win ChampionshipBUFFALO, NY - The Bulls women's basketball team won the UB Tournament with a 77-68 win over Fresno State. Boston defeated Florida Atlantic in the earlier game to take third place in the tournament. The Bulls controlled most of the first half and led 38-27 at halftime. In the second half, UB came out and increased their lead to as much as 11 points, 50-39, with 13:49 remaining. Fresno State fought back, using a 12-0 run to take the lead at 51-50 with just under 11 minutes left in the game. The Bulls held their compsure, retaking the lead on the next possession on a layup by Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach). The score remained close and FSU retook the lead at 61-60 with 6:27 left in the game. Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) hit a layup to tie the score at 62-62 and a free throw by Samantha Cerny (Leonidas, MI/Colon) gave the Bulls the lead for good at 63-62 with 5:23 remaining. Late free throws in the final minutes helped inflate the margin as UB finished with a 77-68 win and the championship of the UB Tournament. The Bulls (7-1) were led by Tiffany Bell, who recorded 17 points and 14 rebounds. Other double figure scorers were Kim Coon (Belding, MI/Belding) with 15, and Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) and Catherine Jacob (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) with 12 points each. Jacob also added six assists. Fresno State was led by Jessie Farias with a game-high 21 points and 11 assists. In the third place game, Boston University defeated Florida Atlantic 82-72. The Terriers were led by Alison Dixon with 28 points. Chantale Jones led the Owls with 26 points. All-Tournament Team |
