UB Impressive in Loss to Tar HeelsCHAPEL HILL, NC - The UB women's basketball team showed they are ready to challenge the nations elite teams in an impressive showing against the fifth ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Carolina pulled away late for a 93-78 win in Carmichael Auditorium.
UB fell behind early, but freshman guard Sonia Ortega came off the bench to spark a 10-0 run to pull the Bulls to within one point at 21-20. Ortega finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Carolina's half time lead was 48-39. UB started the second half strong, again closing the lead to one at 56-55, before Carolina pulled away in the closing minutes. The Bulls enjoyed a statistical advantage in several key catagories, out rebounding the Tar Heels 48-39 and out shooting them from the floor 47% to 43%. Latoya Crumpton had a strong game for Buffalo finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kim Coon also finished with 12 points. UB's record fell to 1-1. The Bulls next game is the home opener on November 22 in Alumni Arena against Siena.
