UB Women's Basketball Close Year with 22-6 RecordThe UB Women's basketball team opened eyes to their brand of basketball this season not only in Western New York, but throughout the country as they completed a 22-6 campaign and proved themselves worthy of recognition among the nation's elite programs.
The Royals also gave the Big East their lumps as UB hammered Syracuse on the road 94-76. A strong 6-0 team traveled to Philadelphia after Christmas for the St. Joseph's Hawks Classic. Two teams from the field, Kansas and host St. Joseph's, reached the NCAA field later in the season. UB's first round contest with the nationally ranked Jayhawks was no easy cakewalk as Kansas found out.
On New Year's Eve, LaToya Crumpton almost single-handedly disposed of Marshall, the Southern Conference Champions, leading the Royals to a 70-55 win over the Herd. Crumpton tallied 14 points (7-of-8 shooting) with 13 rebounds. Doty became the Royals' all-time leading scorer in UB's 96-50 win over Army January 2 at Alumni Arena. The senior netted a game-high 23 points passing 1993 graduate Lynette Bubel's 1,383 points and leaving the floor to a standing ovation. Jacob recorded a career-high 11 assists.
Brenna Doty leaves with school records in nearly every statistical category including points with 1,703, assists with 462 and three-point baskets with 296. Doty and Kim Coon were selected by the league's coaches for Mid-Continent All-Conference honors. Doty was selected to the first team for the third consecutive year while Coon was part of the second team. Off the court, Jacob received honors as one of only five members of the GTE Academic All-District I team. The Royals received recognition in both the Associated Press and USA Today/CNN Coaches Polls with Top 25 votes. The team also attained their highest Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standing ever being ranked 49th out of the 300 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball teams nationwide. |
