Kelly Morrone enters her fourth season as an assistant coach for the University at Buffalo women’s basketball team. Morrone is in charge of working with UB’s guards and is in charge of tape exchange and scouting UB’s opposition.

During the 2007-08 season, Morrone helped Stephanie Bennett make the transition from point guard to shooting guard, where Bennett led the team in scoring and was named to the All-MAC Second Team following the season. Morrone also helped Ashley Zuber make the transition to starting point guard after she was a reserve during the 2006-07 season. Morrone also helped coach a UB defense that finished second in the Mid-American Conference in field goal percentage defense and third in scoring defense. As a team, the Bulls finished with 15 wins in 2007-08, the most since 2002-03.

During Morrone’s first two seasons at UB, the Bulls won 10 games each year. During her first season, she helped coach Brooke Meniuer to a MAC East Player of the Week award.

Morrone was a stand-out guard at the University of South Carolina where she played two season’s under UB head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald, who was an assistant coach with the Gamecocks. In 2001-02, the Gamecocks made it all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and final national ranking of six. She played in 114 career games, starting 70, and averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. As a senior in 2003-04, Morrone tied for the team lead in scoring with 11.7 points, and she netted a career-high 31 points in a win over Mercer on November 26, 2003. Morrone was also the Gamecocks' top three-point shooter, making 40.7 percent of her shots from behind the arc (81-for-199).

In her career, Morrone made 234 three-pointers and had a 36.9 three-point shooting percentage. Her career high in three-pointers (eight) came against Duke on November 25, 2001. Other career highs included 10 rebounds against Mississippi on February 5, 2004 and 11 assists against Wofford on December 4, 2002. She was a three-year team captain at South Carolina, leading the team from 2001 through 2004.

Morrone began her coaching career during the 2004-05 season as the assistant girl’s varsity basketball coach at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, SC. At Heathwood, Morrone coached Brionna Dickerson, who currently plays in the SEC at the University of South Carolina. Dickerson had a brilliant career at Heathwood and was ranked the 17th best player in the country by Roundball Journal prior to her senior year.

Morrone is a native of Syracuse, NY and she graduates from the University of South Carolina in May 2003 with a degree in sports and entertainment management. Morrone began pursuing her master’s, while finishing up her playing career in 2003-4.
