UB Track Hires Two Assistants

Coaches with local ties to help lead the Bulls

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo track and field program announced the hiring of Vicki Mitchell and Perry Jenkins as assistant coaches for the men's and women's track and field programs.

Mitchell comes to UB after a year at William Jewell College, an NAIA college in Liberty, MO. Prior to her work there, Mitchell as the head coach at Holy Angels Academy.

Mitchell will be working with both the men's and women's cross country teams and the long distance runners for the Bulls. Mitchell returns to the Western New York area having, graduated from Amherst Central High School and from Cortland State University.

A distinguished athlete, Mitchell is currently ranked in the top-10 in the nation in the women's 10,000 meter run. She is a former NCAA champion and competed in the 1996 US Olympic trials. Mitchell has also qualified to compete in the 2000 US Olympic Trials.

"This is a great opportunity to bring in a local person with Vicki's reputation as a great athlete herself and will be real positive for the program," said head coach Dick Barry.

Jenkins comes to UB after serving as the head track and field coach at Erie Community College, where he earned NJCAA men's indoor and outdoor National Coach of the Year honors last season, and was the National Coach of the Year for men's outdoor track in 1998. While at ECC, Jenkins has coached 50 All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Americans and produced over 400 NJCAA Region III champions in cross country and track and field.

His coaching experience is not limited to just track, having been an assistant football coach at Buffalo State. He has also been used as a personal consultant by the Buffalo Bills in helping players to enhance their speed and endurance.

"Perry is another local, very successful coach moving up to the Division I level and with his training and expertise should help is be more competitive in the MAC," said Barry.
