UB Track and Field Athletes Receive Academic Honors From MAC

Buffalo, NY - Senior Rashidi Greene (Webster, NY, Aquinas Institute) and junior Odo Okeke (Nigeria) were named Adademic All-MAC for the 1999 season by the Mid-American Conference on June 8, 1999. Greene, a psychology major, was named to the MAC's first team, while Odeke, a computer science major, was named honorable mention. Leading all MAC teams was Bolwing Green on the men's side with five first team athletes, and Miami on the women's side with a total of eight athletes making the first team all-academic list.

Green had a record setting senior season. He opened the season with a first-place finish at the UB Invite with a weight throw of 51' 2 1/4". From there Green would only improve. He followed his performance at the UB Invite with two more first-place finishes in the Class of '32 Invite and the Kane Invite. His mark of 52'2 1/2" at the Class of '32 Invite set a new University at Buffalo record in the weight throw. In his final meet of the indoor season, Green threw his way to an eighth-place finish in the MAC Championships with a personal best mark of 54' 4 1/2", crushing his own school record. Green began his outdoor seasonwith the Albany Invite. The senior managed two first-place finishes in both the discus and the hammer throw. Green improved steadily with each meet as he finished first in his next two meets, the UB Open II and the Al Campbell Open, setting new school records in each meet. Green notched a fifth-place finish in the Kent Open before the MAC Outdoor championships. He threw a career best mark of 186'3", landing himself in fourth place, with his second school record of the season.

Okeke was equally impressive on the track as she was in the classroom. Competing in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, she opened up her 1999 season with a first-place finish at the Buffalo State Invitational, crossing the line in the 200-meter dash in 26.8. She followed her performance at Buff St. with another first-place performance, this time in the 800-meter run at the Kane Invitational. Before the indoor season was complete, Okeke added a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash at the Sam Blair Invite, as well as an 11th-place finish at the Indoor MAC Championships in the 800. Okeke proved to be even more impressive in the outdoor season. Opening the season with the UB Open II, Okeke notched her first of three first-place finishes in the season. Her time of 2:12.31 was enough for a team- best mark in the 800. Okeke followed that with first-place finishes in the Albany Invite (400-meter dash) and the Seahawk Invite (800-meter run). She finished off her junior season with a sixth-place finish at the Outdoor MAC Championships, with a time of 2:14.46 in the 800.

In her career at UB, Okeke has set the school record in the outdoor 800 (2:11.86) and is part of the UB record setting outdoor 1600-meter relay team (3:49.86). She also ranks second in the history of UB in the 1500-meter run (4:40.90), the indoor 800 (2:14.81) and the 1000-meter run (3:04.49).
