BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo women's track and field head coach Vicki Mitchell has announced that Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic endeavors at the University at Buffalo. Hinners will join the freshman class for the 2004-05 school year.

A top pole vaulter in Minnesota, Hinners is an All-State track and field athlete and placed second in her event at the Minnesota Junior Olympics. Hinners also finished fourth at the state meet and holds a personal best competitive height of 11-6.25 in the pole vault. Hinners also has earned All-Northwest Suburban Conference honors in both track and field and gymnastics and has served as the captain of the Crimson's gymnastics squad. She was also a diver with the Maple Grove swim team.

"Carrie is an elite pole vaulter who has cleared 12 feet in practice," said UB pole vault coach Tim Beach. "Her strong gymnastic background will be a bonus. She is highly ranked academically and is a member of the National Honor Society."

Mitchell added, "We are very happy to have Hinners joining our team next fall. She is a very bright and athletic young woman and will make great contributions to our team both on and off the field."

The Bulls' current pole vault lineup includes senior Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons), the school-record holder and a finalist at last season's NCAA Championships. Olson placed 13th overall in the nation with a mark of 12-9.

UB, a member of the NCAA's Division I Mid-American Conference, opened the indoor track and field season last weekend at the Kent State Golden Gala. The team returns to Kent State for its next meet, the Black Squirrel Invitational, on January 9-10. UB's outdoor season begins March 20 at the Wake Forest Relays.
