Indoor Track Weekly ReleaseUB Sets School Marks at Kent State Both the Bulls' men's and women's track and field squads competed at the Kent State Winter Open on December 9 with both squads setting several school records in the process. There was no team scoring in the meet. For the men, senior Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) won the 800 meter race in a record time of 1:51.50 and qualified him for the IC4A Championships. Commisso's time was four seconds faster than the previous mark set by teammate Ben Moskel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) in 1999. Moskel was fourth in the 1000 meters in 2:33.73. Also establishing new records for the men's team were Jerimie Slick (Greece, NY/Greece Olympia) and Joe Loiacano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia). Slick took fifth in the 5000 meters in 14:59.25 surpassing Dan Fischer's mark of 15:10.24 that had stood since 1983. Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) placed right behind Slick in sixth in 15:16.10. Loiacano finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 51-5.75 (15.69m) breaking the old mark of 50-5.25 (15.37m) set by Adam Smith (Varysburg, NY/Attica) last season. Loiacano also qualified for the IC4A meet with the throw. Smith took sixth in the 35-lb. weight throw at 55-10.25 (17.02m) while former Bull and current record holder Rashidi Greene tied for third at 57-7.50 (17.56m) as an unattached entrant. On the women's side, three records set last week at the Colgate Invite fell by the wayside as UB throwers and jumpers improved on their marks. Sophomore triple jumper Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) improved on last week's record of 38-2 to leap 39-8.5 (12.10m) to take second in the event. Her leap also qualified her for the ECAC meet. In the pole vault, freshman Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) broke her mark set last week by placing fifth at 10-4 (3.15m). Deven Fister (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), the record holder going into the 2001 season was seventh at 9-10 (3.00m). Another freshman, Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) improved on her week old shot put record with a toss of 42-9.50 (13.04m) to take seventh. The throw was almost two feet better than the 41-2 mark she set at the Colgate Invite. Janelle Callender (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech) set a school mark in the 200 meter dash in 25.13 to finish fifth overall in a 44-runner field. Callender broke Tonya Reid's old mark of 25.54 which was set in 1994. McFarland finished 11th in the event in 25.74. Callender also placed ninth among 47 runners in the 60 meter dash in 7.94 while Olson was 27th in 8.32. Chrissie Matthews (Waterford, NJ/Edgewood) tied for second in the high jump at 5-3.75 (1.62m) and was 12th in the 60 meter high hurdles (9.72). Sarah Fletcher (Ridgeway, Ont./Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) took second in the 20-lb. weight throw at 57-6.50 (17.54m) and qualified for the ECAC Championships while Thompson was seventh at 50-0 (15.24m). UB's relay squads also fared well as the Distance Medley team took top honors in 13:15.83 while the 4x400 meter team was third in 3:53.51.
