UB Opens Strong At Colgate Invite

Both the Bulls' men's and women's track and field squads opened their seasons Saturday with convincing wins at Colgate's Katie Almeter Memorial Invitational.

UB's men scored 144 points to finish ahead of Colgate (100.5) and Canisius (68.5) in the tri-meet. The Bulls had a pair a double winners in the field events as Adam Smith (Varysburg, NY/Attica) took the shot put with a toss of 49-4.5 (15.05m) and 35-pound weight throw at 54-1.75 (16.50m) while Kamau Halim (Medina, NY/Medina) won the long jump at 22-9.75 (6.95m) and triple jump at 48-2.75 (14.70m).

Other winners for the Bulls included freshman Dan Simpson (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) with a showing of 13-6 (4.11m) in the pole vault. Pete Otovic (DeWitt, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) took the 400 meters in 51.19. Rick Juszkiewicz (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) won the 800 meters in 1:58.36 and Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) took the 1000 meters in 2:32.03 for the Bulls.

The women's squad also was impressive scoring 163 points to easily outdistance Colgate (101) and Canisius (61). UB set four school records in the meet, including a pair by freshmen in their first collegiate competition.

Freshman Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) took the pole vault with a leap of 10-3 (3.12m) and Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) won the shot put with a toss of 41-2 (12.57m).

Other records were set by sophomores Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghmaton) in the triple jump at 38-2 (11.63m) to win the event and Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) who placed second in the 1000 meters in 2:55.94 just three seconds behind the winner from Colgate, Maura McCusker. Keck qualified for the ECAC Championships with her showing in the 1000 meters.

Jenelle Callender (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech), Bernadette Boswell (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt) and Chrissie Matthews (Waterford, NJ/Edgewood) all registered double wins. Callender took the 55 meters in 7.41 and the 200 meters in 25.85. Boswell finished first in the 400 meters in 1:00.35 and the long jump at 16-9.75 (5.12m). Matthews took the high jump at 5-3 (1.60m) and the 55 meter hurdles in 9.12.

Sarah Fletcher (Ridgeway, Ont./Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) won the 20-pound weight throw at 53-5.5 (16.29m) and Katie Scott (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) won the 500 meters in 1:20.52.

Next up for the Bulls is this Saturday's Kent State Open. This will be UB's first taste of Mid-American Conference competition this season.
