Bulls Open Season With Victories

Men's and women's indoor track and field successful at Colgate Invitational

HAMILTON, NY - Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field began competition in their 2001 - 2002 season this weekend at the Colgate Invitational. Both teams finished first place.

The Bulls' men's squad won the three-team Colgate Invitational competition with 146 points, defeating host Colgate who finished with 107. Canisius finished third with 41 points.

UB freshman Sheldon Battle (Jamestown, NY/ Jamestown) placed first individually in the shot put with a toss of 53-8 (16.36m). Junior Joe Clark (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) took first in the 500 with a 1:04.42 finish, qualifying him for the IC4A Championships.

Senior Eric Czubaj (Sloan, NY/ JFK) finished first in the 1000 with a 2:31.29 time. Sophomore Tim Giagios (Rochester, NY/ Gates-Chili) took the first place win in the 800 with a 2:00.14 finish. Sophomore Rob Namulala (Kenmore, NY/ Kenmore West) took first in the triple jump at 43-9.5 (13.35m). Sophomore Dan Simpson (Rochester, NY/ Gates-Chili) took first in the pole vault with 13-6 (4.12m). Freshman Erich Smithson (East Aurora, NY/ Iroquois) took first in the 55 high hurdles, finishing in 8.00.

The 4 x 400 relay team of senior Pete Otovic (DeWitt, NY/ Jamesville-DeWitt), Giagios, freshman Pat Kapperman (Getzville, NY/ Williamsville North) and Clark took first with a 3:25.32 finish.

The UB women placed first above host Colgate in the four-team invitational over the weekend.

Junior Christina Keck (Erie, PA/ McDowell) set a new school record and qualified for the ECAC meet when she took second in the 1000 with a 2:54.87 finish. Keck was one of four UB women at the event qualifying for the ECAC Championship. Senior Chrissie Matthews (Waterford, NJ/ Edgewood) qualified for the ECACs with her first-place victory in the high jump with a 5-6.5 (1.69m) finish. Sophomore Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/ Niagara Falls) took first in the 20-lb. weight throw with a 53-11.5 finish qualifying her for the ECACs. Junior Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/ Binghamton) qualified for the ECACs with her first-place 39-5.25 (12.02m) finish in the triple jump.

The teams will continue competition in their 2001-2002 season next weekend at the Kent State Open at 11:00 am in Kent, Ohio.
