Track and Field Keeps Local Talent Home

Eleven Western New York high school standouts will join Bulls in 2001-02

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo track and field program has excelled at keeping the best local talent in the area, and the 2001-02 season will be no exception. Head coach Dick Barry's recruiting class includes 11 high school standouts from Section VI in the Western New York area.

Joining the Bulls in 2001-02 will be: Sheldon Battle (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown), the 2001 State Champion in the shot put and an All-American and the 2000-01 Class A State Champion in the discus; Bridgette Cleary (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), the 2001 Class A State Champion in the pentathlon (3199 points); Mark Hajnos (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), who finished in third place in the pentathlon at the 2001 New York State meet; Jen Koeppel (Snyder, NY/Amherst), whose top times include a 4:45 in the 1500 meters and a 10:16 in the 3000 meters; Tarynn Knarr (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), a state qualifier in the 800 meters (2:16); Chris Lenz (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), a fourth-place finisher in the 400 meter hurdles at the New York State meet (56.31); Scott Limberg (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown), who placed sixth in the long jump at the New York State meet in 2001 (22'10"); Justin Muise (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West), a third-place finisher in the 400 meter hurdles (55.74) and a sixth-place finisher in the 110 meter hurdles (15.25) at the New York State meet in 2001; Erich Smithson (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), the 2001 Class B State Champion in the 400 meter hurdles (55.69) and the runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles (14.57); Jennifer Stuczynski (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), the 2000 Class B State Champion in the pentathlon (3335 points); and Bryan Weinstein (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North), a state qualifier in the 200 meters (22.00) whose top times also include a 11.00 in the 100 meters and a 50.7 in the 400 meters.

"Section VI had some outstanding athletes this past year and we were fortunate to sign many of them," said Barry. "Their addition should help us in moving up in our conference rankings in both cross country and track and field."
