Bulls Represented At Canadian Olympic Trials

BUFFALO, NY - The 2008 Mid-American Conference Champion in the javelin Vanessa Roelofsen (Alma, Ontario/Norwell District) and Katie Weston (North Bay, Ontario/Widdfield), who just finished her freshman season at UB, both competed in the javelin throw at the Canadian Olympic Trials at the University of Windsor Stadium.

Roelofsen, who competed in June at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finished second in the meet with a throw of 156-0 (47.56m). She finished behind Elizabeth S. Gleadle, who won the javelin competition with a throw of 161-1 (49.09m). In order to qualify for the Olympics the competitors had to throw at least 178-8 (54.50m) for an Olympic “A” automatic qualification or 165-7 (50.50m) for an Olympic “B” qualification, which qualifies you if not enough athletes meet the “A” qualification. The 2008 Beijing Olympics will have a minimum of 24 javelin throwers in the field.

Weston finished in eighth place with her a throw of 134-6 (41.02m). Weston just finished an outstanding first year at UB and was an NCAA East Regional Qualifier after posting a season-best throw of 154-1 (46.97m) earlier this year at the UB Invitational.
