Seven Bulls Named To Academic All-MAC TeamBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo placed a total of seven student-athletes on the 2008 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams, the league announced from its headquarters in Cleveland.
P.J. Godios (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) was selected to the men’s team as well as Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) and Dan Schichtel (Eden, NY/Eden), while Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) and Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) were all selected to the women’s team. Godios, who just completed his senior season with a 3.49 GPA in communications, had his top javelin throw of the season at the Campbell Wright Open with a 197-11 (60.34m). The throw was just shy of the UB school record of 198-10 (60.60m) set in 1998.
Mang, who has a 3.525 GPA in media studies, ran in the 800-meters, 1,500-meters and 5,000-meters for the Bulls. He was second on the team in the 5,000-meters at 15:09.19, which he set at the Miami Invitational.
Porter is an undecided major with a 3.202 GPA andi s coming off another outstanding season. Porter scored a second-place finish in the men's 400-meters in 47.94 at the MAC Championships, just a tenth of a second behind Eastern Michigan's Nate Blackwell (47.84). Porter also placed fourth in the 200-meter finals in 21.54.
Schichtel has a 3.413 GPA in management and tied the UB school record with his fifth-place finish in the men's 100-meter dash. Schichtel lowered his season-best mark to 10.64 and tied the mark set in 1998 by Mike Quagliata. He also ran in the 200-meter dash and joined Porter as part of the 400-meter relay.
Coney, who has a 3.33 GPA in nursing, ended her brilliant UB career with her second straight MAC Title in the heptathlon. Coney accumulated 4,990 points in the seven-event competition, picking up a pair of sixth-place finishes (long jump and javelin) and seventh-place finish (800-meters) to hold off a hard-charging Jen Osborn of Akron by 158 points. This was the second Academic All-MAC team of the season for Coney as she was part of the squad during the indoor season as well.
Hinners, a senior with a 3.789 GPA in environmental science, had her best performance of the season in the pole vault at the MAC Championships, clearing 11-5.75 (3.50m). That total helped her place ninth in the event. Veith, who has a 3.736 GPA in chemistry, has two of UB’s top times during this past Spring. Veith scored a 4:41.02 in the 1,500-meter run at the UB Invitational and she also has the top time in the 5,000-meter run at 18:05.23, which she set at the Seahawk Invitational. Earlier this season, Veith was named to the cross country Academic All-MAC team.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20
cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the
contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior
college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for
the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the
current season only are considered. The Academic All-MAC team is voted
on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives. The
total number of honorees is set for a specific sport or 33 percent of
all nominees, whichever is greater. A total of 20 men and 23 women
were named to the 2008 Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC teams. |
