Fletcher, McFarland Named All-MAC

UB women's track and field standouts selected to first team

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo women's track and field athletes Sarah Fletcher (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) and Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) were named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team following last weekend's league championship meet in Ypsilanti, MI. Both athletes were named to the first team on the basis of their individual event victories during the three-day meet.

Fletcher won her fourth MAC title on Thursday with her victory in the hammer throw with a toss of 184-0 (56.08m). It was her second outdoor hammer throw title, having previously won the event at the 2000 Championships held at UB Stadium. She also won indoor titles in the weight throw in 2000 and 2001. Fletcher also set the school record for the discus throw at the league meet with her third-place finish with a toss of 156-0 (47.56m), bettering her own record in the event, set earlier in the season, by nearly nine feet. A senior, Fletcher completes her UB career as the school record-holder in three events.

McFarland won the Mid-American Conference crown in the triple jump on Saturday with a school-record leap of 42-0.50 (12.81m). She improved on her own school record in the event by eight inches and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held May 29-June 1 in Baton Rouge, LA. McFarland, a junior, also holds the indoor triple jump mark and is part of five record-setting relay squads at UB.
