Bulls Set Four Records on FridayYPSILANTI, MI - The University at Buffalo's men's and women's track and field teams broke four school records on Friday on the second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. UB's women stand seventh of 12 teams with 23 points after two days while the Bulls' men are tied for seventh with Toledo at 21 points among the 12 schools. Central Michigan holds a narrow one point lead in the women's meet over Ball State, 40-39. Host Eastern Michigan stands atop the men's standings with 47 points.
Two other UB women broke their own school records on Friday. Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-6.50 (3.52m), bettering her own record of 11-6.50 (3.51m) set earlier in the season. Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 45-7 (13.77m). The toss was nearly two feet better than her previous best of 43-8.50 (13.32m) set last weekend at Akron's Campbell/Wright Open.
Decathlete Steve Esler (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) finished third in the ten-event competition with 6,538 points. Esler and teammate Mark Hajnos (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) finished one-two in the day's final event, the 1500-meter run. Esler won with a time of 4:32.76, while Hajnos followed in 4:48.35. Hajnos earned a ninth-place overall finish with 5,732 points. Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored an eighth-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase with his 9:16.57 showing. Sprinter Joe Clark (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) qualified for Saturday's 400-meter finals with his 47.15 clocking in the semifinal round. The time was the fastest recorded in Friday's preliminaries. Eric Czubaj (Buffalo, NY/John F. Kennedy) also reached Saturday's finals in the 1500-meters with his preliminary time of 3:50.72, the third-fastest turned in for that event. Competition concludes on Saturday.
