UB Women's Indoor Track & Field Announces Awards
Godin, Lister, Villa, Jezorski earn accolades
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's indoor track and field squad presented its team awards for the 2006 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Millennium Hotel on May 2.
Head coach Vicki Mitchell made the following presentations: Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) was selected as the Top Newcomer; Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) earned the Most Improved Player Award; Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) received the Coaches' Award; and Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) was named Most Outstanding.
Caitlin Godin | The Top Newcomer Award is presented to the individual student-athlete who distinguishes herself as the most talented new player on the team or the individual who accomplishes the greatest achievements as a first-year player. Godin gave the Bulls a strong presence in the high jump as she posted a season-best height of 5-8.75 (1.75m) at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on January 21. The height qualified Godin for the ECAC Championships in March where she finished in a 10th-place tie at 5-5 (1.65m). Godin also scored a fourth-place finish in the high jump at the MAC Championships with a height of 5-8 (1.73m).
Jessica Lister | The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or improvement in her performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Lister was UB's top women's pole vaulter during the season. She turned in a second-place finish at the MAC Championships with a height of 12-8.25 (3.87m), setting a personal-best mark at the meet. Lister also finished sixth at the ECAC Championships at 12-3.50 (3.75m).
Tina Villa | The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. Villa emerged as UB's top shot put and discus thrower during the indoor season. She set a career-best mark of 46-2.75 (14.09m) in the shot put to win a first-place finish at the Cornell Upstate Challenge and qualify for the ECAC meet. Villa also finished sixth in the shot put at the MAC Championships with a toss of 46-2 (14.07m) and 13th at the ECAC meet.
Jen Jezorski | The Most Outstanding Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution to the accomplishments of the team through her skills and leadership. Jezorski, who was also named UB's Most Outstanding for the cross country season, set two individual and a relay school record during the season. She won the mile in 4:53.39 at the MAC Championships to become the first UB woman to win a MAC individual indoor title on the track after she anchored the distance medley relay team to UB's first MAC relay title the night before in a school-record time of 11:46.48. She also posted records in the 1,000-meters (2:52.06) and mile (4:50.20) during the campaign.
The Bulls completed their season with a ninth-place finish at the MAC Championships and tied for 32nd among 50 scoring teams at the ECAC Championships.
