Bulls Open MAC Track and Field Championships
OXFORD, OH – Competition began Thursday at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the George L. Rider Track at Miami University. With four men’s events and three women’s events complete, the UB men stand tied for sixth with 11 points and the women are tied for fourth, also with 11 points, in the three-day meet. UB’s Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the scoring efforts for the Bulls on Thursday with a second-place finish in the women’s hammer throw. Vance turned in another season-best in the event with a toss of 60.37m, more than three-meters better than her toss at last week’s Campbell/Wright Open in Akron, her previous best. Vance finished second to Akron’s Stevi Large, who set a new MAC record of 61.74m in the final round to win her second straight hammer throw title. Vance’s throw also improved her qualifying mark for the NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, FL on Memorial Day weekend.
The UB men picked up a third-place finish from javelin thrower P.J. Godios (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis). Godios, who turned in a personal-best toss at last week’s Campbell/Wright Open, improved on the throw with a toss of 56.39m on Thursday. Men’s distance specialist Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) picked up a fourth-place finish in the 10,000-meters in 30:57.39. UB’s women pole vaulters also scored points as Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) and Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) both cleared 3.50m to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the multi-events, UB athletes are in good shape after the first day. Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) holds the lead in the women’s heptathlon through four of the seven events. Coney has scored 3,151 points to hold a 119 point lead on Western Michigan’s Danielle Brown. Coney’s top finishes on Thursday included a second-place finish in the 200m (24.82) and a tie for second in the high jump (1.63m). Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) is in second place in the men’s decathlon. After five events, Joki has compiled 3,578 points and trails Akron’s Michael Wagner by just 32 points. Joki tied for first in the 100-meters in 11.26 and had a second-place finish in the long jump at 6.85m on Thursday. Competition continues through Saturday.
