UB Men's Indoor Track & Field Announces Awards
Giordano, Flor, Joki, Asbach earn accolades
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's indoor track and field squad presented its team awards for the
2004-05 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Millennium Hotel on May 3.
Head coach Perry Jenkins made the following presentations:
Mike Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville)
earned the Top Newcomer Award; John Flor (Albion, NY/Albion)
earned the Most Improved Player Award;
Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs,
NY/Schuylerville) received the Coaches' Award; and
Gary Asbach (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island)
was named Most Outstanding.

The Top Newcomer Award is presented to the individual student-athlete who distinguishes himself as the
most talented new player on the team or the individual who accomplishes the greatest achievements as a first-year player.
Giordano was the team's top weight thrower, earning a trip to the IC4A Championships. His best shot put of the season was at
the Cornell Invitational on January 22 with a distance of 51-2.75 (15.61m), winning the competition and qualifying for the
IC4A meet. He also had the top 35-pound weight throw distance of 48-3.50 (14.72m) at the season-opening Black Squirrel
Invitational. He finished 18th in the shot put at the IC4A Championships.

The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or
improvement in his performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Flor was
one of the Bulls' top distance performers, setting the team's fastest mark in the 5,000-meter run. Flor turned in a 14:55.75
clocking at Penn State's Sykes-Sabock Challenge, finishing 10th in a strong field that included several other runners from
Mid-American Conference schools. He also posted a top 3,000-meter time of 8:36.76 at the Syracuse Invitational, winning
the race by more than four seconds. Flor finished 10th in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the MAC Championships.

The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the
team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness
and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. Joki, selected Most Outstanding following the 2003-04 season, finished
third in the heptathlon at the 2005 MAC Championships, winning the 60-meter dash event of the competition in 7.18 seconds.
Joki also broke UB's 60-meter hurdles record in 8.15 seconds at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge, finishing sixth. Joki won the
long jump at the Cornell Invitational at 23-2 (7.06m) for his season-best distance. At the IC4A Championships, he finished 11th
in the long jump at 22-1.50 (6.74m) and 23rd in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.83.

The Most Outstanding Player Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution
to the accomplishments of the team through his skills and leadership. Asbach posted a season-best distance in the triple jump
at the MAC Championships at 46-1.25 (14.05m) to finish fourth overall and also placed sixth in the long jump at
22-7.25 (6.89m). His top long jump was at the Cornell Invitational when he cleared 22-9.75 (6.95m).
The Bulls completed their season with a sixth-place finish at the MAC Championships. UB did not score at
the IC4A Championships.
