UB Open Produces School Records

Seven records broken, one tied, in final regular season tuneup for MAC Championships

BUFFALO, NY - Seven school records were broken and another mark was tied Saturday afternoon at the UB Open Track and Field event at UB Stadium. There was no team scoring at the meet which served as the final regular season event for the Bulls prior to next weekend's Mid-American Conference championships in Ypsilanti, MI. Saturday's meet also served as the final home event for UB head coach Dick Barry, who announced his retirement last week. Barry has amassed more than 600 victories in his 17-year tenure as coach of the Bulls men's and women's cross country and track programs.

Joe Clark (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) set two records on Saturday. Clark broke his own marks in winning the 200 meters in 21.51 and the 400 meters in 46.97. Clark shaved a quarter-second off his previous record 200 time of 21.75 set at the Wake Forest Relays and eclipsed his 400 mark of 47.63 from the Sea Ray Relays earlier in the season.

Byron McKinney (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) also bested his own record in the shot put with a heave of 55-7 (16.95m) to place second behind unattached athlete Shelon Battle. McKinney broke the mark of 54-7.25 (16.64m) set by himself and Joe Loiacono (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) at the Sea Ray Relays. Eric Czubaj (Buffalo, NY/John F. Kennedy) registered wins in the 800 (1:53.40) and 5000 meter (15:56.58) runs.

For the women, Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and April Pabilonia (Clarence, NY/Clarence) set individual records and were part of a record-setting relay squad. McFarland took the triple jump at 41-4.50 (12.61m) to best her old record by more than a foot. Pabilonia won the long jump with a leap of 18-9.25 (5.72m) to break Terry Scherne's 1994 mark of 18-2.50 (5.55m). The pair were also part of the 4x100 relay squad that also included Jenelle Callender (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech) and Bernadette Boswell (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt) that finished in 47.87, four-hundreths of a second faster than the old mark of 47.91 set in 2000.

Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) also established a new mark in winning the shot put with a 43-1.25 (13.23m) heave. Thompson broke her own record set earlier this year with the toss. Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) tied her school record of 11-6 (3.51m) to take the pole vault competition. Meagan Rogers (Courtenay, BC/George P. Vanier) swept the hurdles races with a 15.09 in the 100 and a 1:02.10 in the 400 meter distances. Sarah Fletcher (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) was also victorious in the discus (41.60m) and hammer (54.76m) throws.
