Bulls Win Four Events at Hillsdale Gina Relays

The University at Buffalo track and field teams completed action on Saturday at the Gina Relays at Hillsdale College. The Bulls posted four winners in the meet that included more than 30 teams, including several Mid-American Conference schools. There was no team scoring in the 40th annual event.

Roelofsen Sets Javelin Record Again

Sophomore Vanessa Roelofsen (Alma, Ontario/Norwell District SS) won the women’s javelin throw with a record-setting toss. Roelofsen’s throw measured 169-8 (51.71m), breaking her own UB record, set three weeks ago at the Miami Invitational, by almost three feet. It was the third time this season and fourth time in her career that Roelofsen had established a new javelin mark. She won the event by more than 30 feet over Ohio University’s Chelsea Stephan, who placed second. Roelofsen’s throw was also a meet record and places her 12th in the national rankings for the event.

Kohout Takes 800-Meters

Also picking up a victory for the UB women was Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) in the 800-meter run. Kohout took the race in 2:10.88, establishing a season-best mark in the event. Kohout lowered her top time this season by 1.25 seconds. Another MAC runner, Akron’s Emily Freudenrich, placed second in 2:11.53.

The UB men scored an individual and a relay victory at the meet. Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) won the 400-meter hurdles in 52.17. He also set a season best in the 200-meters with a 22.49 clocking to place 11th overall among a field of 79 entrants. UB’s men’s 4x100-meter relay team scored a photo finish victory in its race. The Bulls foursome of Bryan Weinstein (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North), Reggie Rucker (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech), Heim and Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) finished in 41.281. Michigan State’s foursome was second by just six-thousandths of a second (41.287).

Strong Results in the Field Events

The UB men also added a pair of third-place finishes in field events. Rayson Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) took the third spot in the triple jump at 47-11 (14.60m). Mike Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville) scored a third-place finish in the shot put at 55-1 (16.79m). Giordano’s toss was just one centimeter shy of meeting the NCAA East Regional qualifying mark of 16.80m, but did establish a season-best for the senior. Richards placed eighth in the long jump at 22-11 (6.98m).

The UB women’s weight throwers also had a strong day. Beverly Weyer (Castalia, OH/St. Mary’s Central Catholic) finished fourth in the discus at 145-7 (44.38m). She also established a season-best mark in the hammer throw at 166-1 (50.63m). Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) took fifth in the discus at 144-5 (44.03m) and sixth in the shot put at 45-0.50 (13.73m). Pole vaulters Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) and Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) were among nine jumpers with an identical height of 11-7.75 (3.55m). Four vaulters finished ahead of the pack at 12-1.50 (3.70m). Based on the number of failed attempts, Hinners was credited with a tie for sixth while Lister took eighth place overall.

Downer, Veith, Richards Earn High Finishes on Track

On the track, Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins/Randolph Tech) finished fifth in the 400-meters in 56.71, while Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was sixth in the 1,500-meters in 4:34.28. On the men’s side, Richards placed sixth in the 100-meters in 10.84 to go along with his anchor leg of the winning relay.
