UB Women Second, Men Fourth at Akron
AKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Akron Quad meet establishing a pair of school records. In the team competition, UB's women scored 151 points to finish second to host Akron's 211 points. Kent State (149) and Toledo (82) rounded out the women's field. In the men's meet, the Bulls finished fourth with 97.50 points, trailing Penn State (192.50), Akron (182.50) and Kent State (181.50). Women's weight thrower Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) earned regional qualifying marks in both the shot put and hammer throws to lead the team. Vance won the hammer throw at 173-7 (52.90m), more than 12 feet better than the second-place finisher. She also broke the school record in the shot put finishing second at 48-5.50 (14.77m). The throw surpassed Faith Thompson's (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) record of 46-8 (14.22m) set last season. Vance also finished seventh in discus throw at 114-0 (34.75m). The UB women also had two additional first-place showings. Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) won the 1,500-meter run in 4:37.0, bettering her season-best finish by more than five seconds. Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) easily won the pole vault at 12-9.50 (3.90m), a foot better than the second-place finisher. Pauletta Dickerson (Wichita, KS/Northeast Magnet/Cloud County CC) scored a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 25.7 seconds and took third in the 100-meters in a season-best 12.6 seconds. Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.13. Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:42.2. Dana Ventrone (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) earned a third-place finish in the long jump at 16-10.75 (5.15m). For the UB men, freshman Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) took the 1,500-meter run in a team-best clocking of 3:55.7. The time shaved almost two seconds off his previous best mark from March's Raleigh Relays.
The Bulls also grabbed three third-place finishes in the men's meet. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, John Flor (Albion, NY/Albion) raced to a 9:45.1 clocking, cutting 20 seconds off his previous best. Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) finished the 110-meter hurdles in 14.5 seconds. Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) leapt 47-15.0 (14.36m) in the triple jump. Both squads return to Akron next Saturday for the Campbell/Wright Open. The
Mid-American Conference Championships begin May 13. |
