UB Competes with Best at Penn Relays

Several Bulls' athletes represented UB at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia over the weekend. Teams from the top college and high school programs throughout the country as well as many of the United States' top amateur athletes were in competition in the five-day meet. Many of the events were divided into several subcategories, including overall championships, Eastern championships and Championship of America.

UB's Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was the top performer for the Bulls at the meet. McFarland, a sophomore, won the Eastern Triple Jump competition with a leap of 40-2 (12.24m).

Katie Scott (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) finished fourth of nine in 1:02.59 in her heat of the 400 hurdles competition. Multi-event athlete Meagan Rogers (Courtenay, BC/G.P. Vanier) competed in the heptathlon, placing 10th of 12 entrants after the first day of competition. Rogers, however, was unable to complete the grueling seven-event competition the following day due to an injury and was forced to withdraw after completing six of the seven events.

The women's 4x400 relay squad finished third in its heat in 3:51.34 while the 4x100 squad placed fifth in its heat in 48.28. The Bulls also placed 14th among 31 teams in the 4x800 relay in a time of 9:05.30.

The Bulls' men had some strong performances in the field events. Keith Gentes (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) placed fifth in the hammer with a toss of 182-7 (55.62m). In the triple jump, Kamau Halim (Medina, NY/Medina) was eighth at 48-4.5 (14.74m) while Mark Curry (Brockport, NY/Brockport) placed seventh in the Eastern Triple Jump at 46-10.25 (14.28m).

Other UB entrants included Adam Smith (Varysburg, NY/Attica), who took 12th in the discus at 160-8 (48.98m), and Bryan Lundy (Stormville, NY/Carmel), who was 19th in the javelin at 181-0 (55.18m).

UB's men's 4x400 relay squad placed second in its heat in 3:19.32. The 4x800 team was 23rd overall in 7:46.25.
