Williams, Love Open Penn Relays in Multis

Men's decathlon and women's heptathlon events complete at top-flight meet

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The 2003 Penn Relays are underway at Philadelphia's Franklin Field with the first two events, the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, completed in the meet.

Men's decathlete Carlos Williams (Jamestown, NY/Westfield Academy) and women's heptathlete Katie Love (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) turned in strong performances in their events with Williams taking fifth and Love scoring a 10th-place finish against some of the top multi-event athletes in the East.

Williams, a junior, scored 6,337 points in his 10 events to finish fifth in a 14-entrant field. He turned in two second-place finishes in throwing events with a shot put toss of 41-7 (12.67m) on the first day of competition and a discus throw of 119-2 (36.32m) on the final day. Williams also tied for fifth in the pole vault at 12-5.50 (3.80m) to move from an overall seventh-place ranking after the first day.

Love, a fifth-year senior, tallied a career-best 4,115 points in the seven-event heptathlon, placing 10th among 13 women's athletes. She registered a second-place finish in the final event of the competition, the 800-meter run, in 2:21.45 for her best showing of the two days. Love also won her flight and tied for third overall in the high jump at 5-2.25 (1.58m).

Penn State's J.T. Kuretich (decathlon, 7,056 points) and Florida A&M's Robin McClain (heptathlon, 5,025 points) won their respective competitions.

UB has a contingent of 24 athletes at the meet, which continues through Saturday.
