Williams, Love Open Penn Relays in Multis
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The 2003 Penn Relays are underway at Philadelphia's Franklin Field with the first two events, the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, completed in the meet. Men's decathlete Carlos Williams (Jamestown, NY/Westfield Academy) and women's heptathlete Katie Love (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) turned in strong performances in their events with Williams taking fifth and Love scoring a 10th-place finish against some of the top multi-event athletes in the East.
Love, a fifth-year senior, tallied a career-best 4,115 points in the seven-event heptathlon, placing 10th among 13 women's athletes. She registered a second-place finish in the final event of the competition, the 800-meter run, in 2:21.45 for her best showing of the two days. Love also won her flight and tied for third overall in the high jump at 5-2.25 (1.58m). Penn State's J.T. Kuretich (decathlon, 7,056 points) and Florida A&M's Robin McClain (heptathlon, 5,025 points) won their respective competitions. UB has a contingent of 24 athletes at the meet, which continues through Saturday. |
