Outdoor Track Weekly ReleaseUB Takes Several Events at Syracuse The University at Buffalo's men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday at the Judith and Leslie Vielbig Invitational meet hosted by Syracuse University. There was no team scoring in the meet. UB's Kamau Halim (Medina, NY/Medina) posted a double victory, taking the men's long jump at 24-3 (7.39m) and triple jump at 49-11.75 (15.23m). Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) broke his own record for the second week in a row, taking the 800 meters in 1:51.64. Commisso ran a 1:51.83 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, TN last week. Joe Loiacano (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) also set a new school mark with his second place finish in the shot put at 52-2.50 (15.91m). Loaicano broke the record of 51-1 set by Adam Smith (Varysburg, NY/Attica) last season and equaled by Loiacano in the season-opening meet at North Carolina-Wilmington. Other UB men's winners included Tim Giagios (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) in the 400 hurdles (56.70), Keith Gentes (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) in the hammer throw (179-5, 54.68m) and Bryan Lundy (Stormville, NY/Carmel) in the javelin (177-4, 54.06m). UB's men also took the 4x100 (42.35) and 4x400 (3:19.09) relays. The UB women were led by strong performances from Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls). McFarland took the triple jump at 39-5.75 (12.03m) while Thompson won the shot put at 41-7.25 (12.68m). Other women's winners for the Bulls included Bernadette Boswell (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt) in the 400 meters (59.19), Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) in the 800 (2:13.73) and Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) in the pole vault (10-4, 3.15m). Christina Matthews (Waterford, NJ/Edgewood) and Jennifer Roseti (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) both recorded 5-3.75 (1.62m) heights in the high jump. The 4x100 relay squad of Jenelle Callender (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech), Meagan Rogers (Courtenay, BC/G.P. Vanier), Diane Corredor (Westfield, NY/Westfield) and McFarland was also victorious in 47.95. Mitchell Wins Distance Competition UB distance coach Vicki Mitchell, representing Team Reebok, won the 5,000 meters in 17:24.54 at the meet. Mitchell cruised to the win, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, Carolyn Rogers of Canisius.
