Bulls Roll to Top Marks at UB Invitational

A combination of clear skies, light winds and record high temperatures enabled the University at Buffalo men’s and women's track and field teams to establish top marks on Saturday at the UB Invitational at UB Stadium. There was no team scoring at the meet. Out of the 36 events on the meet schedule on Saturday, UB athletes won 22 with the men's and women's teams each claiming 11 victories.

Porter Claims a Double

UB posted just one double winner on Saturday in the individual events. Sophomore men's sprinter Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) won the 200-meter dash in a season-best 21.44, tying the school record, and the 400-meter event in 47.79. It was the second consecutive week for Porter to win two individual events. He won the 100- and 200-meter races at the Miami Invitational on April 12.

A couple events provided close finishes on Saturday. In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, freshmen Austin Archibald (Ridge, NY/Longwood) and Jamal Norward (Buffalo, NY/Hamburg) squared off with Archibald claiming the race by just two-hundredths of a second. Archibald finished in 15.33 to Norward’s 15.35. In the women’s javelin, freshman Katie Weston (North Bay, Ontario/Widdifield) scored her first collegiate victory with a throw of 46.97m, nearly three meters better than her previous best and bettering her regional qualifying distance.

She won the event by just five centimeters over teammate Vanessa Roelofsen (Alma, Ontario/Norwell District SS). Roelofsen's top throw was 46.92m. Both throwers have already qualified for the regionals with Roelofsen setting her best mark of 47.89m at the Texas Relays on April 5.

Maskulinski Earns Regional Qualifying Mark

Sophomore Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY/Iroquois) won the women’s pole vault competition at the UB Invitational with a leap of 3.88m. The height was a season-best performance for Maskulinski as she established an NCAA East Regional qualifying mark in the event. The NCAA regionals are the last weekend in May. Four UB women have earned regional marks thus far in 2008, all in field events.

Welcome Home

Some familiar names to UB track and field fans competed in Saturday’s meet as unattached entrants. Men’s record holder Reggie Rucker won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.04 with Mike Giordano claiming the men’s shot put with a throw of 18.24m.
