UB Women Win 10 Events at Bucknell Bison Open

LEWISBURG, PA – University at Buffalo women’s track and field athletes won 10 events as the Bulls concluded the Bucknell Bison Open over the weekend. There was no team scoring in the meet that featured schools from throughout Pennsylvania and New York.

Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) won two events, setting school records in both competitions. Thompson broke her own mark in the shot put with a toss of 50-9.25 (15.47m), bettering the old distance by nearly two feet set last month. Thompson also shattered Sarah Fletcher’s 2002 record in the hammer throw. Thompson won the event with a throw of 197-6 (60.21m), almost 10 feet better than Fletcher.

Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) set a season-best and personal record with her victory in the discus throw at 153-6 (46.79m). Vance also finished second to Thompson in the shot put, qualifying for the NCAA regional meet, at 49-7 (15.11m) and was fifth in the hammer at 168-0 (51.20m).

Sprinter Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins Tech) won two individual races and was part of UB’s two relay winners. Downer set season-best times to win the 100-meters in 12.19 seconds and the 200-meters in 24.87 seconds. Downer anchored the 4x100-meter relay squad to a season-best time of 47.23 seconds. Dana Ventrone (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley), Charisse Everett (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) and Vashone Wallace (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) ran the first three legs of the relay. Downer opened the 4x400-meter relay as the Bulls finished in 3:51.13. Wallace, Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) made up the rest of the foursome.

Everett, Ventrone and Wallace also posted season bests in their sprint races. Everett was fourth in the 200-meters in 25.36 seconds while Wallace also placed fourth in the 400-meters in 58.76 seconds. Everett was fourth in the 100-meters in 12.38 seconds and Ventrone lowered her season-best in the race to 12.76 seconds.

Jezorski turned in a season-best and established a new personal record with her victory in the 1,500-meter run. Jezorski took the invitational flight of the event in 4:29.48, just missing the regional qualifying mark by a second and a half.

Coney established season-bests in both hurdles races, setting a school record in the 400-meter hurdles. She won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.27, breaking Katie Scott's 2000 mark of 1:01.84. She also finished third in the 100-meter distance in 14.91 seconds.

Freshman distance specialist Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) won the 3,000-meter run in 10:12.69.

Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) tied for first with three other entrants in the pole vault. Lister cleared 11-3.75 (3.45m). Freshman Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) tied for fifth in the event at 10-10 (3.30m). Freshman Vanessa Roelofson (Alma, Ontario/Norwell District SS) finished second in the javelin at 133-11 (40.83m).

Although the UB men did not post any winners, they did finish high with top five finishes in nine events.

Weight thrower George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) posted a second-place finish in the shot put at 50-0 (15.24m). Fetchko also established a season-best distance for a third-place showing in the discus at 144-9 (44.12m). Michael Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville) was fourth in the shot put at 49-5.75 (15.08m).

Gary Asbach (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was third in the long jump at 22-9 (6.93m) and took fifth in the triple jump at 44-11 (13.69m). Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) set a season-best with a 52.77 clocking in the 400-meter hurdles.

Heim and Asbach were also part of UB’s fourth-place 4x100-meter relay team. Ryan Brennan (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) and Eric Bream (Lockport, NY/Lockport) ran the first two legs with Heim and Asbach following as the foursome turned in a time of 43.06 seconds. Brennan, Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) and Heim placed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:23.53.

Onile White (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) took third in the 800-meters in 1:54.35 while Andy Wigton (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) finished fifth in the 5,000-meters in a season-best 14:26.91.

The Bulls host the UB Open on Saturday, April 23 starting at 11:00 am.
