Casey Garbaty Wins MAC Field Athlete of Week Award UB freshman javelin thrower honored for record setting performance
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo freshman Casey Garbaty has been named as the Mid-American Conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced from its Cleveland headquarters today. Garbaty earned the award following his record setting performance at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University on Saturday, March 28. The freshman became the first UB athlete to eclipse 200 feet in the javelin throw with a toss of 204-6 (62.33m), to finish first and earned an NCAA East Regional qualifying mark. The throw broke the previous school record set in 1998 by nearly six feet. With his winning toss, Garbaty improved his distance in the event from his previous best by over 40 feet. His throw is also the best in the MAC this season. Garbaty is the third UB athlete to earn league honors in the past two weeks. Juniors Dan Harris and Allison Grimes picked up last week's MAC Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week awards, the first given for the 2009 outdoor season, for their performances at the outdoor season-opening UNCW Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, NC on March 14. The Bulls travel to Williamsburg, VA to participate at this weekend's Colonial Relays, hosted by the College of William and Mary.
