Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Release

Bulls Open Season at Seahawk Invite

The Bulls opened their outdoor track and field season at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, NC.

UB's men placed second behind host UNC-Wilmington with 135 points to the Seahawks' 198. The Citadel (66) was third in the three-team meet. The Bulls' women's squad also finished second behind the Seahawks, 253-197, with The Citadel taking third with 37 points.

The men's team won seven of the 18 events. Joe Loiacano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) tied the school record winning the shot put with a toss of 51-1, equaling Adam Smith's (Varysburg, NY/Attica) mark set last season. Other winners for the Bulls included Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) in the 400 meters, Ben Moskel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) in the 800 meters, Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 1500 meters, Tim Giagios (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) in the 400 hurdles, Mark Curry (Brockport, NY/Brockport) in the triple jump and Smith in the discus.

UB's women won 10 events. Two Bulls set school records in their first outdoor meets of their collegiate careers. Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) broke Joyce Kenneson's 16-year old shot put mark, winning the event with a toss of 41-10. Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) took the pole vault, becoming the first women's vaulter to reach 11 feet. Olson's 11-0 mark surpassed Devon Fister's (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) record from last season by two inches.

The Bulls also picked up victories from distance runners Allison Laske (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) in the 800, Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) in the 1500 and Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) in the 3000. UB also swept the hurdles with Meagan Rogers (Courtenay, BC/G.P. Vanier) taking the 100 hurdles and Katie Scott (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) winning the 400 hurdles. Christina Matthews (Waterford, NJ/Edgewood) took the high jump and Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) won the triple jump. The UB 4 x 400 relay squad was also victorious.

UB's next competition is at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa on March 24 and 25.
