Successful Day for UB Women at ECAC Championships
BOSTON, MA – It was another successful second day for the University at Buffalo women’s track and field team as the Bulls posted three top performances in the ECAC Track and Field Championships at Northeastern University’s Reggie Lewis Center on Sunday. The Bulls finished 11th among 48 scoring teams in the meet with 26 points. Pittsburgh (86.75) and Duke (64.25) were the top two squads in the meet of the largest athletic league in the country with 72 members. Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) set another school record in the weight throw on Sunday. Thompson turned in a toss of 65-6.75 (19.98m) to extend her own record in the event by more than 10 inches and improve her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She finished third overall in the event. Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport)) was 17th in the event with a toss of 53-2.25 (16.21m).
UB relayers set two records on Sunday. The 4x400-meter relay team of Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Vashone Wallace (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) and Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins Tech) finished sixth in 3:46.05. The time was the second record in two days for the foursome after qualifying for the finals with a 3:47.25 showing on Saturday. Downer was also part of UB’s record-setting Distance Medley Relay team, which finished fourth in 11:40.67. The foursome included Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside), Downer, Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Kelli O’Brien (Clifton Springs, NY/Manchester-Shortsville). Thompson and both relay teams also earned All-East recognition on Sunday. They joined Vance and Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst), who earned the honors with their finishes on Saturday. The top eight finishers in each event are named to the All-East squad. The UB men’s team, meanwhile, had one competitor on Sunday in the IC4A Championships at nearby Boston University. Freshman Mike Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville) finished 18th in the shot put with a throw of 48-1.75 (14.67m). UB failed to score in the men’s meet as 53 teams achieved points in the meet. Rutgers (74.33) and George Mason (56) topped the men’s team scoring. |
