Sarah Vance Wins MAC Shot Put Title

Men place seventh, women ninth at Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships

YPSILANTI, MI - University at Buffalo sophomore Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) became the Mid-American Conference champion in the women's shot put at the league championship meet at the Bob Parks Indoor Track at Eastern Michigan University in the meet's final day of competition on Saturday.

Vance won the event with a toss of 48-2 (14.68m), six inches better than second-place finisher Ashley Morrow of Northern Illinois. Vance's throw also broke Faith Thompson's record of 46-8.25 (14.23m) set last season and bettered her ECAC qualifying mark by more than three feet.

The Bulls also posted a pair of second-place finishes on Saturday. Women's runner Allison Laske (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) finished the 800-meter race in 2:11.09, a half-second behind Akron's Beata Rudzinska (2:10.57). For the men, freshman Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) scored with a triple jump of 47-11.75 (14.62m).

Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and Carlos Williams (Jamestown, NY/Westfield Academy) scored in the heptathlon competition, which wrapped up on Saturday. Joki placed third, scoring 4,868 points in the seven-event competition, while Williams secured sixth place with 4,644 points.

Other scorers for the UB women included the fourth-place 4x400-meter relay team (3:51.00) and two eighth-place finishes by Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) in the 400-meter run (57.50) and Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) in the 3,000-meter run (10:05.23).

The UB men's 4x400-meter relay team placed sixth in 3:21.04. Three Bulls picked up eighth-place finishes, Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) in the 800-meters (1:57.14), Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 3,000-meters (8:40.42) and Erich Smithson (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) in the 60-meter hurdles (8.41).

In the overall team championship, Eastern Michigan's men's squad won for the ninth consecutive time, while the Central Michigan women claimed their second title in the past three seasons. Complete team scoring is below.

Men Eastern Michigan 186, Central Michigan 145, Kent State 112, Western Michigan 69.50, Akron 64.50, Ball State 33, UB 32, Ohio 20.

Women Central Michigan 103, Eastern Michigan 92.50, Kent State 90.50, Ball State 77, Western Michigan 57, Miami (OH) 51, Akron 51, Bowling Green 45, UB 41, Toledo 28, Northern Illiniois 13, Ohio 9, Marshall 5.
