UB Men's, Women's Tracksters Sixth After First Day of MAC Indoor Championships
YPSILANTI, MI - After the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, both the University at Buffalo's men's and women's teams stand in sixth place. The UB women are tied for sixth with Toledo with 16 points while the Bulls have picked up nine points in the men's meet. Central Michigan leads the women's meet with 41 points while the Chippewas are tied with Kent State at 35 points apiece in the men's meet. UB senior Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) tied for second in the women's pole vault competition. Olson cleared 13-1 (3.99m) tying her with Kent State's Jackie Rodgers. Akron All-American Kira Sims, the MAC leader in the event this season, broke the meet record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a height of 14-0 (4.27m).
The UB women also qualified a pair of racers for finals on Saturday. Senior Allison Laske (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) placed second in the preliminary heat of the 800-meter run in 2:15.08. Junior Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) qualified eighth in the 400-meter race in a season-best 57.78.
Freshman Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) qualified for Saturday's 800-meter finals with his 1:55.01 clocking in Friday's heats. The time was the fourth-fastest among the field. In the men's heptathlon, Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) stands third after the first four events with 2,913 points. Carlos Williams (Jamestown, NY/Westfield Academy) is seventh at 2,710. Competition concludes tomorrow. |
