UB Men's, Women's Tracksters Sixth After First Day of MAC Indoor Championships

YPSILANTI, MI - After the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, both the University at Buffalo's men's and women's teams stand in sixth place. The UB women are tied for sixth with Toledo with 16 points while the Bulls have picked up nine points in the men's meet. Central Michigan leads the women's meet with 41 points while the Chippewas are tied with Kent State at 35 points apiece in the men's meet.

UB senior Laura Olson (Lyons, NY/Lyons) tied for second in the women's pole vault competition. Olson cleared 13-1 (3.99m) tying her with Kent State's Jackie Rodgers. Akron All-American Kira Sims, the MAC leader in the event this season, broke the meet record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a height of 14-0 (4.27m).

Multi-event athlete Meagan Rogers (Courtenay, BC/George P. Vanier) scored a fifth-place finish in the women's pentathlon. She scored a total of 3,501 points in the five-event competition, just seven points shy of her school record 3,508 total set at the 2002 championships. Junior Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run in 17:30.86, improving on her season-best in the race by more than 15 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) also scored points for the Bulls with her seventh-place finish in the 20-pound weight throw at 51-3.50 (15.63m).

The UB women also qualified a pair of racers for finals on Saturday. Senior Allison Laske (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) placed second in the preliminary heat of the 800-meter run in 2:15.08. Junior Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) qualified eighth in the 400-meter race in a season-best 57.78.

For the men, UB's Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) placed sixth in the long jump at 22-9 (6.93m) with teammate Gary Asbach (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) finishing eighth at 22-2.25 (6.76m). UB's distance medley relay team scored a fourth-place finish in 10:12.55.

Freshman Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) qualified for Saturday's 800-meter finals with his 1:55.01 clocking in Friday's heats. The time was the fourth-fastest among the field.

In the men's heptathlon, Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) stands third after the first four events with 2,913 points. Carlos Williams (Jamestown, NY/Westfield Academy) is seventh at 2,710.

Competition concludes tomorrow.
